Race Overview

EST. 1975

The Omaha Marathon is a smaller, no-nonsense race put on by the Omaha Running Club. It starts and runs through downtown Omaha, passes by the Missouri River, and gives you a genuine point-to-point experience through a city that takes its running seriously. The field is intimate, which means no shoulder-to-shoulder shuffling at the start and no losing yourself in the crowd for the first three miles. You'll actually race it from the gun.

The course has real elevation gain, so don't treat this as a flat PR course and expect to coast. It rolls through downtown with some stretches that will test your patience. The honest answer is that you can qualify for Boston here, but you'll earn it. Be conservative through the middle miles, because the net uphill character accumulates. Registration is open and straightforward through the Omaha Running Club, with prices that go up as race day gets closer, so locking in early saves you money. Military and club member discounts are available too. If you want a real race without the circus, this is a good one.

This is a point-to-point course with net gain, so go in knowing it demands more than it gives back on elevation. Total climbing of around 547 feet spread across the course means steady rolling effort rather than one brutal wall. The net gain of roughly 256 feet makes a PR possible but not automatic. Expect to work through several rolling stretches across downtown Omaha, with the Missouri River providing a low-point reference near the course's flattest sections. Save something for the back half, where cumulative climbing tends to expose early pacing mistakes. Turns through downtown add brief momentum changes. USATF certified and Boston-qualifying, so the course is legit.

What to expect

Late September in Omaha means you could get a perfect cool morning or a reminder that the Great Plains does what it wants. The morning start tends to be comfortable, but afternoon warmth can creep up on you if the race runs longer. That 20-degree swing between low and high is real, so don't overdress for the corral and don't underestimate the back half if the sun comes out. Hydrate from mile one. A coin-flip day is always possible, but most years the conditions are manageable if you pace for the heat and don't bank on a cool finish.
