Race Overview

EST. 2005

Fargo is about as flat as a marathon gets. The course runs a loop through the city and surrounding area, staying almost entirely level from start to finish. The elevation barely moves the whole way, which means your legs feel the same at mile 22 as they did at mile two, and that's either great news or a warning depending on how your training went. Late May weather is usually cooperative, mild and low humidity, though a warm morning can sneak up on you. Hydrate from mile one.

This is a legitimate PR and Boston qualifier course, and registration is open to everyone with a 2,000-person cap. It fills, so sign up early if you have your eye on a specific date. Pricing tiers up the longer you wait, which is reason enough to register the day the window opens. The field is not huge, which means less jostling at the start and a quieter race day overall. If you want a flat, honest course without a lot of fuss, Fargo delivers.

Start and finish in one place

Fargo runs a loop course with just 34 feet separating its highest and lowest points, making it one of the flattest marathons you'll find anywhere. There are no meaningful climbs to manage and no sustained descents to bank on for free speed, so your legs carry a consistent load the entire way. Pacing discipline matters here more than course management. The surface is predominantly road, and the loop layout means wind exposure can shift as you change direction. In late May, temperatures are typically mild, but warm stretches are possible. Run even splits and the flat profile rewards you.

What to expect

Late May in Fargo can go a few different ways. The typical morning start is cool enough for a light layer you'll shed early, but by the back half of the race the temperature can climb into the low 70s. That's not brutal, but it's warm enough to make the final miles feel harder than your splits suggest. The course is flat and open, so there's not much shade to count on. Hydrate from mile one and don't let a comfortable first hour talk you into skipping cups.
