Race Overview

EST. 1983

The Mexico City Marathon starts at the Olympic stadium in the south of the city and runs all the way to the Zócalo, the main square in the historic center. It's a big race through an enormous city, and the streets fill with noise for most of the route. The course itself is not brutally hilly. But you are running above 7,300 feet the whole way, and that changes everything. If you have not spent time at altitude before, your legs will feel fine and your breathing will not. Don't go out at sea-level pace.

This race is a Boston qualifier, and the course records show genuinely fast times are possible here. But altitude affects most runners more than they expect, so build in extra time. If you are flying in from a lower elevation, try to arrive a few days early and let your body adjust before race day. Registration is open, but the field fills up, so check when entries open in mid-February and move quickly. The finish at the Zócalo, one of the largest public squares in the world, surrounded by colonial architecture, is worth every bit of the effort to get there.

The point-to-point route runs from Estadio Olímpico Universitario northeast to the Zócalo, sitting above 7,300 feet throughout. Net elevation is a modest upward drift of roughly 200 feet, so don't expect a net-downhill advantage. The course stays relatively flat by urban standards, but altitude is the dominant variable at this elevation. Legs that feel fine at sea level will feel heavier here, and pace judgments get tricky. The course is not USATF certified, which matters for Boston qualification paperwork. Surface is urban road throughout. There are no major climbs to flag, but the altitude demands conservative early pacing.

What to expect

Late August in Mexico City means mild mornings and warm afternoons. The start temperature is comfortable, often in the low 50s, but the day heats up as you run. Rain is also a real possibility since it's the rainy season. You might get wet, you might get lucky. The bigger factor is altitude, not temperature. Even on a cool day, the thin air will make your effort feel harder than your splits suggest. Don't let the pleasant morning fool you into going out too fast.
