Race Overview

EST. 1986

The LA Marathon starts at Dodger Stadium, which sounds cool until you realize the first thing you do is run uphill out of the parking lot. From there the course heads west through Hollywood, and the neighborhoods do most of the talking. You'll run past the Capitol Records building, through West Hollywood, and down into Beverly Hills. It is genuinely surreal to be running down streets you've seen in movies, and that stretch keeps you occupied through the middle miles.

The one place to be careful is the climb through Beverly Hills around miles 16 to 19. It is not dramatic, but it is steady, and if you've been running on the adrenaline of Hollywood you will feel it. Don't go with the crowd early. Save something for there. After the crest you drop toward Century City and the finish, and the net downhill does help late. Entry is open registration on a first-come, first-served basis with tiered pricing, so register early because it sells out. If you miss the window, around 125 charity partners offer spots with fundraising commitments. This is not a PR-first race for most people, but it is a genuinely fun one to do at least once.

Different start and finish

The course runs net downhill at 226 feet, but the first half earns that descent. You climb out of Dodger Stadium early, then face rolling terrain through Hollywood and West Hollywood before a sustained push up into Beverly Hills around miles 16 to 19. That stretch is where a lot of races unravel, so bank patience there, not time. After the crest, it tips downhill toward Century City and the finish. The net loss is real, but the middle-miles climbing means this course rewards even pacing over aggressive early banking. Surface is paved throughout. The course is USATF certified and qualifies for Boston.

What to expect

March in LA usually means a cool morning at the gun and a warm finish. You'll likely start in the low 50s, which is comfortable for running, but by the time you're working through Beverly Hills and Century City the temperature is climbing toward 70. The back half of this course runs warm, and there's not much shade. Hydrate from mile one, not just when you feel it. On a typical year the conditions are manageable, but if you're chasing a fast time, the sun in the final miles is something to plan around.
