CIM runs point-to-point from Folsom to downtown Sacramento. That 350 feet of net drop is free speed, until your quads file a complaint somewhere around mile 20. Eugene comes in around 60°F on race day, which is also solid. The difference is variance. Late April in the Pacific Northwest can be crisp and perfect, or it can be wet and windy. Eugene has seen race days that fit both descriptions. If you train for a specific weather scenario and get a different one, that is a problem CIM is less likely to hand you.
Neither race is a heat gamble. But CIM's weather is more predictable race to race, and predictability matters when you are chasing a specific time.
Training block fit: which race matches your calendar
This is where many runners make the wrong call. They pick the race that sounds fastest, then realize three weeks in that the training block does not fit their life.
CIM in December means starting your build in September. That is a fall training block: summer base behind you, peak weeks in October and November, taper into December. It suits runners who spend the summer building aerobic base and want a defined fall goal race.
Eugene in late April means starting your build in January. That is a winter training block: running in the cold, often in the dark, with peak weeks in February and March. It suits runners who prefer spring racing, or who tried a fall race and want a second attempt before the next qualifying cycle closes.
The pairing that makes the most sense for serious BQ chasers: run CIM in December, evaluate, and use Eugene in April as your follow-up if you need it. The two races are almost perfectly spaced for a December attempt and a spring second shot. That four-month window is long enough to recover, reassess, and make targeted adjustments.
Registration: how hard is it to get a bib
CIM sells out. It opens registration on a set date, and you need to be ready to register when that window opens. It is not a lottery, which is a genuine advantage over the majors, but it does require attention and planning. Miss the window and you are waiting another year.
Eugene has grown but remains more accessible. You are not sprinting to a registration portal at 9am on a specific Tuesday. That lower-pressure entry process is a meaningful practical advantage if your race calendar is in flux.

Pick Eugene as your Plan B if CIM does not go your way. That is the most practical case for it. A December miss with a near-BQ result and four months to adjust before a spring attempt is a sound strategy, and the two races are almost perfectly spaced to support it.
