Race Overview

EST. 2010

The race starts right on the beach at Johnnie Mercers Fishing Pier, which is a pretty solid way to begin a marathon. The early miles have that open, coastal feel, salt air and wide roads, and the course gradually works its way inland toward Wilmington. It rolls gently the whole way, nothing that forces you to blow up your pacing plan, but the mild ups and downs keep you honest. Don't treat the flat profile as a blank check in the first half.

This is a genuine Boston qualifier course in a small-field atmosphere. Registration is open to everyone, but it does sell out, so if you're targeting this race don't drag your feet on signing up. Race morning logistics take a little planning since the start and finish are in different places, but shuttles run between Wrightsville Beach and downtown Wilmington, so it's manageable. February on the Carolina coast can run anywhere from crisp and perfect to warm and breezy, so have a plan for either. If conditions cooperate, this course can give you a fast day.

Different start and finish

Point-to-point from Wrightsville Beach to downtown Wilmington, this course is nearly net-neutral despite modest cumulative gain and loss. The highest point tops out around 60 feet, so no sustained climbing threatens the legs. The profile rolls gently throughout rather than front-loading or back-loading effort, which means pacing discipline matters more than bracing for a single brutal stretch. The final miles into Wilmington are exposed to potential coastal wind, which can work for or against you depending on the day. Surface is predominantly road. The flat-to-rolling character and low elevation ceiling make this one of the faster courses in the Southeast.

What to expect

February here can be genuinely nice or a bit of a coin-flip. The morning gun often fires in cool, low-40s air, which feels great for the first few miles. By the finish you could be running in the mid-60s if the day warms up, so don't overdress. Coastal wind is the real variable. A headwind on the back half can cost you more than the temperature ever would, so check the forecast the night before and adjust your target pace accordingly.
