Race Overview

EST. 1997

The Whistlestop is a small race on a converted rail trail in northern Wisconsin, and that description does not do it justice. You start out in the woods and spend most of the day running point-to-point on crushed limestone through the trees, losing elevation the whole way to Ashland on the south shore of Lake Superior. The course is straight and quiet. No big crowds, no tall buildings, no distractions. Just you and the trail. It has a genuine PR-friendly profile, but the surface is not asphalt, so go out easy and let the downhill come to you in the second half. Don't chase the grade in the early miles.

This is a genuinely small field. You will not be fighting for space at the start or getting lost in a crowd. It is open registration with no caps, so getting in is straightforward. Register online and close the tab. The closest airport is in Duluth, about an hour and a half out, so plan a night in Ashland before race day. October in northern Wisconsin can be cold, especially at the gun, so bring a throwaway layer for the start. If you want a no-fuss race with a real shot at a time you are proud of, this one is worth the trip.

Different start and finish

The Whistlestop runs point-to-point with a net drop of 536 feet, losing elevation across the course rather than concentrating the descent in one spot. The highest ground comes early and the course trends downward toward Ashland and Lake Superior. That profile rewards conservative early pacing. Going out controlled lets the back half work for you instead of against you. Surface is largely crushed limestone trail on the old rail corridor, which is firm but not as forgiving as asphalt. Expect a flat, straight layout with minimal turns. Wind can be a factor on exposed stretches. The net loss makes this a genuine PR course for runners who respect the surface and resist the temptation to bank time early.

What to expect

October in northern Wisconsin means a cold start. You will want a throwaway layer at the gun. The morning temperature is often in the low 40s and it warms into the low 50s by mid-race, which is actually good news for running fast. Once you warm up in the first few miles, conditions tend to be comfortable for the long haul. Wind on the exposed stretches of the trail is the one variable to watch. Dress in layers you can shed and do not skip gloves early.
