Race Overview

EST. 2008

Rehoboth Beach is a small race in a beach town in early December, and that combination works better than it sounds. The course is almost entirely flat, out-and-back, and runs through quiet streets close to the boardwalk. The town is calm this time of year, which means no big-city crowd noise, but also no congestion. You will feel the effort in your legs, not the course.

It is a legitimate Boston qualifier and genuinely one of the flatter courses you will find on the East Coast, so if a PR is the goal this is worth your attention. Registration opens in early January and fills to capacity, so mark your calendar and don't sleep on it. The seven-hour time limit is generous. Philadelphia and Baltimore are both about two hours away by car if you need a base, and parking near the start is free. If you have been waiting for a low-drama, fast-course December race, this is a good answer.

The course is an out-and-back with minimal elevation change, topping out under 50 feet at its highest. Total gain is modest, spread across gentle rollers rather than any single climb, so there is no single hill to fear or game. The out half runs through Rehoboth Beach and into the surrounding flat terrain; the return leg is a near-mirror of what you already ran. Pacing implications are straightforward: no long downhill to bank time on, but no wall waiting for you either. Tangent discipline matters more than hill strategy here. Surface is standard road, and the December date means minimal sun exposure.

What to expect

Early December in Rehoboth Beach means a cold start, often in the low 30s. You will want throwaway layers for the corral and the first few miles. Once you get moving you will warm up, but the afternoon high only reaches the upper 40s, so you are racing in cool-to-cold air the whole way. Wind off the coast can add a chill, especially on the back half of the out-and-back. The conditions genuinely favor fast running if you dress right and don't go out too hot trying to stay warm.
