Race Overview

EST. 2023

The Lehigh Valley Marathon runs point-to-point from Allentown through Bethlehem and into Easton, largely along the D&L Trail. The course is genuinely net downhill, which matters. You gain some elevation early, but once you're on the trail the descents start stacking up and the footing turns forgiving underfoot. The field is small and that's a feature, not a flaw. You won't be fighting for space at water stops or weaving through crowds. Mid-November in the Lehigh Valley means bare trees and quiet trail stretches, and finishing in Easton after running through three distinct cities gives the whole thing a real sense of travel.

This is a legit Boston qualifier and the open registration makes it easy to get in. Don't let the small field fool you into thinking it's a soft effort. The early climb is real, so don't go out too hard chasing the net downhill. Save that energy for the back half when the trail does the work for you. If you're looking for a low-drama fall race where you can focus on a time goal without lottery anxiety or a massive production around you, this one is worth the trip to eastern Pennsylvania.

Different start and finish

This point-to-point course drops a net 194 feet from start to finish, with total loss outpacing gain by roughly 200 feet. The early miles carry some modest climbing before the course settles onto the D&L Trail, where the profile flattens and the descents accumulate gradually. The net drop favors negative splitting and supports a controlled early effort. Expect a packed-gravel trail surface for much of the second half, which can feel forgiving underfoot but rewards even pacing over aggressive early surges. With minimal sharp turns and a largely sheltered trail corridor, wind exposure is manageable. The closing miles trend downward, so save something for a strong finish rather than racing the first half.

What to expect

Mid-November in the Lehigh Valley means a chilly start, often in the mid-to-upper 30s, with afternoon highs that usually top out in the mid-50s. You'll want throwaway layers for the corral. Once you're moving, the cold works in your favor. The trail corridor can be breezy in spots, so a light shell at the gun is smart. Overall, the conditions tend to favor a fast effort rather than fighting the weather.
