Race Overview

EST. 2004

Grand Rapids is the kind of race you show up to with a time goal and a real shot at hitting it. The course runs out and back through the city with almost no net elevation change, which sounds simple and basically is. The range between the high and low points is small enough that you'll barely notice the grade shifts. It feels honest. What you put in is what you get out.

The start and finish are at the YMCA on Lake Michigan Drive in downtown Grand Rapids. October in West Michigan usually gives you a cold corral and cool running temps for most of the race, so have a throwaway layer ready and don't be surprised if the back half feels brisker than the first. Entry is open registration with tiered pricing, so you don't need to fight a lottery or chase a qualifying standard. Just sign up, train well, and show up ready to race. It's a mid-size field, which means you get real crowd support without the chaos of a massive event. If you're chasing a BQ or a personal best on a no-nonsense course, this one is worth the trip.

The course runs an out-and-back layout with a net elevation change of zero. The total vertical range is modest, roughly 84 feet between the highest and lowest points, so what climbs exist are shallow and brief. There is no meaningful downhill to chase or long grind to absorb. Pacing implications are straightforward: what you run out, you run back. The absence of a net drop means you earn the finish on legs alone, and the even grade rewards even splitting. Start conservatively, hold steady through the turnaround, and resist the urge to push the early miles. USATF certified, so the distance is reliable for qualifier attempts.

What to expect

October in Grand Rapids runs cool, with a cold start and temperatures that climb slowly through the morning. You'll want a throwaway layer at the corral and probably won't need it past mile three. The back half can feel brisker with exposure on the return leg, so don't dress for the finish line temperature. It's a good window for fast running if you're ready for it, but don't assume warm just because it's fall.
