Race Overview

EST. 1978

The Detroit Free Press Marathon does something almost no other marathon does: it sends you into another country mid-race. Around miles 3 to 4 you run down into the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, cross under the Detroit River into Canada, and come back across the Ambassador Bridge into the US. It is genuinely surreal and worth the trip alone. The rest of the course loops through Detroit neighborhoods on mostly rolling road with nothing too severe. The weather in mid-October usually cooperates, cool enough to run well, though you should pack a throwaway layer for the start. Don't get carried away on the tunnel exit climb. Save something for the second half.

This is a loop course, open to most runners willing to sign up early, and registration is straightforward through EnMotive. The field is on the smaller side, which means no crushing corral chaos and room to run your own race. It qualifies for Boston, though the BQ rate is modest, so treat it as a real effort if that is your goal. If you want the international crossing experience without a lottery or qualifier, this is a rare chance to get it. A charity entry is also available if the standard registration fills. Show up ready to run, not just to cross a border.

The course is nearly net-neutral, with just under 400 feet of gain and loss across the loop. Expect rolling terrain throughout rather than one concentrated climb. The tunnel crossing into Windsor comes early and drops you below river level before a short climb back out, so plan for that effort in the first third. The back half runs through Detroit neighborhoods with intermittent rollers. Nothing here is brutally steep, but the course does not give free speed either. At roughly 400 feet of gain, PR attempts are possible but require disciplined pacing from the start. Surface is primarily road. October temperatures typically sit in the mid-40s to upper-50s at race time, which generally favors steady efforts.

What to expect

Mid-October in Detroit runs cool and crisp. You're typically looking at a low-40s start, which means layers in the corral that you'll want to shed by mile 5 or 6. The afternoon high sits in the upper 50s, so the back half of the race is usually comfortable rather than warm. It's a good window for moving fast. That said, Great Lakes weather can shift, so check the forecast in the final days and don't assume the mild median is guaranteed.
